Waterfed reach and wash window cleaning versus "lads on ladders"

As a leading eco friendly cleaning company ICS are willing to look at any ways to help minimise the cleaning industry's impact on the environment. We now use the reach and wash window cleaning system on many sites due to its environmental benefits over traditional window cleaning techniques -see here for more for the benefits of using the reach and wash window cleaning system.

But how does the new waterfed pole window cleaning stack up against traditional lads on ladders window cleaners?

As mentioned the reach and water fed system has less environmental impact due to only using purified water and no harmful cleaning chemicals. Also for health and safety, after the 2005 Work at Height Regulations were introduced to help prevent injury using ladders was severely restricted, so using the reach and wash with operator on the ground is going to be safer than a window cleaner going up a ladder.

Many reach and wash operators believe their system is quicker and more efficient (using purified water keeps dirt at bay keeping windows cleaner for longer) meaning in theory they can do more and charge less.

But what are the advantages for contract cleaners using the traditional window cleaning technique? Waterfed poles and all the equipment that goes with them are expensive, you need a generator, pump, the poles themselves and a van to house all these, paying anywhere between £1500 - £15000 for some decent kit.

Another drawback to reach and wash is a shiner is actually at the level of the windows as opposed to being on the ground and can use a scraper around ledges and frames. Sometimes access makes it impossible to us the reach and wash, with parking restrictions or difficult angles meaning that ladders maybe a more immediate way of getting to clean those difficult to get to windows. Also maintenance needs to be ongoing to ensure the reach and wash system works at it's best.

So both traditional and the new reach and wash window cleaning ways have advantages and drawbacks, here at ICS Cleaning we use in the main the reach and wash system but combine it where necessary with the traditional lad on a ladder.
