Poorly designed offices and commercial premises make contract cleaning more difficult than it should be.

Ask any office cleaner carrying buckets of water up several flights of stairs each day what would help them clean better and help them out, they would probably say - what about putting tap on the top floor or a cleaning cupboard with a purpose built water point.

Why are commercial premises so poorly designed and thought out when it comes to cleaning them?

A cleaning cupboard is almost never designed or thought of, maybe only as an afterthought and then usually it is just a space to fit a few mops and toilet rolls in. In fact the same could be said for any facilities for cleaning being integrated into the building.

In one chain of health clubs we used to clean, there highest traffic areas were the shower and changing areas, with the usual build up of body fats, hair, grease, dirt et al. In not one of these clubs was there purpose built tap, let alone a high pressure tap to be able blast away the dirt (which they needed several times a day) instead our cleaners had to resort to hooking up a jet washer to sink taps that literally drip feed water and were never going to clean the areas well enough. Why was not one ounce of thought put into putting in a high pressure tap, or proper draining gutters, tiles that do not stain after a couple of months etc.

A office worker at the least expects a desk, access to electricity, internet connection, telephone connections etc, but a cleaner has to drag extension cables all over the place to find a spare plug point or has to drag buckets of water from the toilet to the top floor because a bucket wont fit under the kitchen sink.

Not only does this make cleaning a building much more difficult but also presents significant health and safety implications.

With a little forethought day to day cleaning could be much easier making the cleaners workplace better, reducing health and safety risks improving efficiency  leading to better standards of cleaning.
