Chemicals found in conventional cleaning products

Many of the ingredients contained in non eco friendly cleaning chemicals are known to have detrimental and damaging effects on the environment and humankind.

Phosphates

These are used as water softeners and to improve cleaning. They stimulate growth of algae in receiving waters. This algae grows in such huge quantities that it starves the water of oxygen, killing fish and plant life.

Enzymes

These can cause severe skin conditions and asthma attacks. Enzymes digest stains. During manufacturing enzymes can be genetically engineered to cause pulmonary hemorrhaging.

Chlorine bleaches

These are in conventional toilet cleaners, washing powders, dishwasher detergents. During the breakdown of these bleaches carcinogenic, toxic substances are formed.

Optical brighteners

Whitening agents . They are used to give the illusion of whiteness by attaching themselves to the fabric to reflect white light. Extremely difficult to biodegrade, can cause severe skin irritation and mutate micro­organisms in receiving waters.

Synthetic perfumes

Used to mask the smell of the ingredients. Many people have allergic reactions to perfume but are unaware until they succumb to symptoms later in life. Just a cheap substitute for natural oils, perfumes and essences.

Petroleum base additives

Most household products are petroleum based, ie polish. These often break down incompletely and contain toxic impurities. They are highly irritant, neuro-Toxin causing depression; they cause allergic reactions and endanger plant and animal life.

Formaldehyde

Traditionally used to preserve corpses now preserves some products.

Sodium tallowate

Made from water, caustic soda and the fat from dead animals.

Glycerin

Unless stated is from a vegetable source, glycerin will be obtained from the carcasses of dead animals.

Lanolin

Extracted from the processed wool from both live and dead animals.

Chemical plasticizers

Added to make soaps easier to mould.
