authorities show that between 2 and 7 window cleaners are killed each
year in the UK and about 20 - 30 are severely injured with many more
suffer less serious injuries.
These accidents are rarely due to a fault on the ladder but usually from incorrect use of the ladders. Typical misuse of ladders include overreaching, stepping off the ladder and working on ledges and working from excessively long, unsecured ladders.
Many of these accidents can be avoided. The key factor in preventing falls is to ensure that the ladder is stable in use. Tying the ladder to a suitable point to prevent movement should be done where conditions permit. Other methods to consider is to secure using anchorage part way down the ladder, and using stability devices to help foot the ladder.
All window cleaners should be suitably trained and have specific training in working at heights and have health and safety training in using ladders correctly. The more training and more care taken the less the rate of accidents that occur to poor practice.
