Cleaning contractors cutting back on costs should not cut back on training or quality of service.

ICS have pointed out a few ways that cleaning companies can help themselves to get thorough the difficult economic times - see here for more about cleaning companies and the recession

ICS have suggested many ways to cut back on costs and still offer a great service but without affecting the quality of service but one area cleaning contractors should not consider cutting back on is training.

As a labour intense industry with over 60% of total costs made up in wages, it easy to see where your biggest costs are and ergo where your biggest savings could be.

It's very difficult to reduce wages, and we have long argued that if you want professional cleaners you must pay professional rates, so where else are some cleaning companies trying to save some money?

One are is the cost and time taken in training staff. This though in our view would be very short sighted and would severely affect the quality of service. With times being tough so are clients and they will not tolerate a bad service, and if you do not provide great training for cleaners you will not be able to provide a good service.

Good training for cleaners is not just about a short induction course at the start of the contract. Cleaners must be given ongoing training and feedback on the job they are doing, not only does this lead to a two way conversation between the client and the cleaning company, there may often be reasons why a cleaner hasn't cleaned a certain area, but means cleaning staff are getting the feedback and if handled correctly the motivation they need to carry out an often thankless task.

Training, particularly for low paid, often low skilled employees should not just be about the stick approach, cleaners need to be told when they are doing a good job even if the client does not appreciate what the cleaner is doing (this probably indicates the cleaner is doing a good job!) cleaning supervisors and managers who do know what is involved must give good feedback to keep morale high.

ICS Cleaning are an eco friendly office cleaning company in the UK; we invest a great deal in selecting the right staff, ensuring they have excellent ongoing training and support, so we can be sure we deliver excellent cleaning standards day in day out.
