Cleaners require better training part 1

There have been some reporting in the media, the  BBC and the Telegraph to name a few, that highlight the need for better training for cleaning staff.

One of many issues which could be tackled by better training is the reduction of infection. Many hospitals now use disinfectant wipes to try to neutralise the MRSA bug, but the cloths are designed to be used once and on one surface, in the media stories cleaners have been found to be using the same wipes on different surfaces which could transmit the bug as cleaners move from surface to surface.

Colour coding cloths and equipment helps protect against cross contamination but the cleaners need to have ongoing training to ensure that a specific tool is only used in specific area.

Another important part of training is to get cleaners where possible to start cleaning areas and items which are cleaner first and then working up to dirtier areas so that dirtier areas do not contaminate cleaner areas.

Once cleaners have received their training it is vital they keep on getting regular refreshers and key messages are reinforced often.

Cleaners needs training to reduce high staff turnover rates.
